It’s Carnival Time in Trinidad & Tobago!
Trinidad will once again transform into an island of exuberant celebration and elaborate festivities with its annual Carnival, from 23 – 24 February 2009. With its massive masquerade bands, spectacular costumes, pulsating music and unparalleled stamina for partying, Trinidad's Carnival is often described as the greatest show on earth and is said to be the largest outside of Rio, Brazil.
A deep-rooted tradition that fuses the island’s multicultural background, Carnival paints the island in jubilant colour and brings masses of costumed revellers to the streets for a party where no invitation is necessary. The most anticipated of all island festivals, Trinidad boasts one of the original Carnival celebrations. Every year it attracts countless visitors to watch and participate in the vibrant atmosphere and this year’s event promises to be no different.
Each year festivities on the island evolve, making each year’s celebration a unique experience for all. Traditional competitions for Carnival king and queen and the lavish masquerade balls will join new programmes like the first ever Carnival comedy fest this year.
Carnival is not just restricted to the two days which precede Ash Wednesday; preliminary steel band contests will be hosted all over the island and on the Saturday before Carnival Monday top bands will perform in front of thousands of spectators and selected judges as part of Panorama. The weekend prior to J'Ouvert (French patois for opening of day), parades of steel bands and characters in costume can be seen dancing along the streets of the island.
As Trinidad’s serene sister island, Tobago’s Carnival offers a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere compared to the rowdy revelries in Trinidad. In Tobago’s capital, the party begins in the early morning hours as parading locals covered in mud or brightly coloured paint take over the streets along with men in costumed caricatures of traditional Carnival spirits. As the party continues into the daylight, masquerade bands enliven the streets with more than just music, wearing costumes of elaborate sequin and feather designs. In the weeks prior to Carnival Monday, the island also hosts contests for Calypso monarch where visitors can sit back and savour the island’s sultry singing talent and unique steelband sound.
After the party, there is still lots to do around the islands. To enjoy quality time to relax, Tobago offers the white sands of Pigeon Point where you can catch a breathtaking sunset. As an island that features the world’s oldest protected rainforest, Tobago is also a great place to venture on a picturesque hiking adventure.
